On October 19th, the 2023 Open-Source New Frontier Cooperation Summit hosted by Chance Foundation was held in Wuhan, with the theme of "Explore the Open-Source New Frontier, Create a Digital Future". At the summit, the first domestic Open-Source Innovation and Education Association was established, and Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) was awarded the plaque as one of the first four association bases at the establishment ceremony. Vice President Gaoliang delivered a speech via a video link.
Gaoliang said that the summit exerted great significance on the development of China's open-source environment, hoped that it could inspire new ideas for open-source development, promote new cooperation in the field of open-source, and wished the summit a complete success.
Prof. Bai Xiang, Dean of SSE, delivered a keynote speech. He stated that universities are important drivers for the inheritance and development of open-source culture. By encouraging the communication between open-source talents from enterprises and university students, building an open-source faculty, and promoting internships as a part of the industrial open-source ecosystem through school-enterprise cooperation, we could guide students to the domestic open-source software ecosystem and therefore cultivate reserve force for the development of a sustainable ecosystem.
The summit was hosted by the Chance Foundation, with special support from the Linux Foundation, and hosted by HUST and OSChina. School of Software Engineering (SSE), on behalf of HUST,organized the summit. Participants delivered theme speeches, launched SigStore open-source community, established the Open-Source Innovation and Education Association and hold project donation ceremony and closed-door meeting. Through these activities, they discussed about the security of the open-source software supply chain and the digital transformation of China's manufacturing industry in order to contribute to the future development of open-source and create an open, collaborative, and sustainable digital society.
The Open-Source Innovation and Education Association was jointly initiated by renowned domestic universities such as Tsinghua University, HUST, Chongqing University, Wuhan University, Chongqing University of Posts and Telecommunications, East China Normal University, Xiamen University and Harbin Engineering University, as well as famous organizations such as Chance Foundation, Linux Foundation, Open Source Initiative, OSChina, and eworks. It aimed to promote the innovation and development of open-source education, enhance the sharing of educational resources for open-source software and hardware, and cultivate more talents experienced in open-source technology and operation. The first four Open-Source Innovation and Education Association bases include Tsinghua University, HUST, East China Normal University, and Chongqing University of Posts and Telecommunications.
