The 5th National Conference on Biomedical Data Mining and Computing (BMDMC2023) was held in Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) from November 18th to 19th. The conference is hosted by the Chinese Society for Bioinformatics (CSB), organized by the Biomedical Data Mining and Computing Committee of CSB and the School of Software Engineering (SSE) of HUST, and co-organized by theSchool of Life Science and Technology, the School of Public Health, and the School of Artificial Intelligence and Automation of HUST. Prof. Yu Junqing, member of theUniversity Committee and Vice President of HUST, attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech.
The conference commenced in the academic lecture hall of Building 1 at the Academic Exchange Centre in HUST on the morning of November 18th. Those who attended the conference included: Prof. Yu Junqing, Academician Fan Mingwu from the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), Prof. Xiao Yi, Vice Chairman of CSB, Prof. Huang Deshuang, Director of the Biomedical Data Mining and Computing Committee of CSB and Chairman of the conference, Xie Guo, Project Director of the Information Department of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Prof. Bai Xiang, Dean of SSE and Executive Chairman of the conference, and Wang Shixian, Secretary of the Party Committee of SSE. The opening ceremony was presided over by Prof. Zheng Chunhou from Anhui University, Secretary General of the Biomedical Data Mining and Computing Committee of CSB.
Prof. Yu Junqing delivered a speech on behalf of HUST, expressing sincere greetings and gratitude to the experts and scholars present at the conference. He emphasized that HUST attached great importance to interdisciplinary research and especially to the promotion of the collaborative innovation and convergent development between medicine and engineering in favor for people's physical health. He believed that the conference would promote the convergence of biomedical big data theory, algorithms, software, and artificial intelligence, and further enhance the development of related fields.
Prof. Huang Deshuang, the Chairman of the conference, delivered a speech expressing gratitude to HUST for hosting this conference. He hoped that this conference could provide a platform for interdisciplinary exchanges among experts and scholars in related fields, promote the application of artificial intelligence and big data technology in biomedical research, and enhance the development of bioinformatics in China, thus contributing to the construction of application software for corresponding sectors and effectively addressing major national strategic needs.
At the opening ceremony, the establishment ceremony of the Biomedical Data Mining and Computing Committee of CSB was held. Prof. Xiao Yi presented appointment letters to the Chairman, Secretary General, and Standing Committee members of the committee.
Academician Fan Mingwu gave a keynote lecture at the conference titled Application of Nuclear Technology in Medical Treatment - Discovery and Treatment of Tumors. It elaborated on the important role that non-power nuclear technology played in medical treatment, especially in the discovery and treatment of tumors. He pointed out that the development and application of information technologies such as big data and artificial intelligence had made the research and application of nuclear medicine more efficient, accurate, and convenient.
This conference included the main venue and 6 branch venues (including 8 topics). On the morning of November 18th and 19th, Prof. Zhang Yan from Tianjin University, Prof. Hu Weiming from the Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Prof. Zhang Xuegong from Tsinghua University, Prof. Hu Dewen from National University of Defense Technology, Prof. Shen Hongbin from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Prof. Chen Enhong from University of Science and Technology of China delivered reports respectively.
In the afternoon, the sub-forums of the conference were held in Room 211 and 311 of Building 1, as well as in the multifunctional hall on the second floor of Building 8. Experts and scholars conducted symposiums on eight topics including: (1) Single Cell Data Mining and Computing, (2) Biocomputing and Synthetic Biology, (3) Biomedical Big Data Mining and Analysis, (4) Intestinal Flora and Health, (5) Biological Sequence Analysis, Structure Prediction and Simulation, (6) Drug Target Prediction and Drug Molecular Design, (7) Artificial Intelligence and Applications of Biomedicine, and (8) Intelligent Medical Imaging and Application.
Prof. Shen Gang, Vice Dean of SSE, Prof. Wan Lin, and Prof. Pei Xiaobing respectively served as co-chair of forums with the topics of Artificial Intelligence and Applications of Biomedicine, Intelligent Medical Imaging and Application, and Biomedical Big Data Mining and Analysis. Prof. Wan Lin gave a report titled Payplus Medical Image Processing Platform.Ms. Li Minghui gave a report titled Prediction Methods of Antigen Antibody Binding Affinity Based on Ensemble Learning.
BMDMC includes a series of conferences organized by CSB. Having been held for four consecutive sessions, it has been one of the most influential national academic conferences on artificial intelligence and biomedical big data in China. The theme of this conference was Empowering Biomedical Big Data with Artificial Intelligence, aiming to promote the convergent development of biomedical big data theory, algorithms, software, and artificial intelligence. Academician Chen Runsheng served as the Honorary Chairman of the conference, Sun Zhirong, Huang Deshuang, and Gao Liang the Chairmen of the conference, Bai Xiang the Executive Chairman, and Li Guohui and Xue Zhidong the Chairman of the organizing committee of the conference.
There are over 70 well-known experts and scholars delivering reports in the conference or hosting the forums, including high-level talents supported by the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, Chang Jiang Scholars Program and National High-level Talents Supporting Program and deans from School of Computer Science & Technology, School of Artificial Intelligence and Automation and SSE. Besides, over 300 scholars and graduate students in the fields of information, life, medicine and so on from universities and research institutions nationwide attended the conference.
