From July 27 to 31, the 4th National University Faculty Teaching Innovation Competition was successfully held at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China. Prof.Wan Lin’s team from the School of Software Engineering (SSE) won the national first prize in the Senior Faculty Group for Emerging Engineering Education.
In the on-site competition, Prof.Wan Lin presented the innovative highlights of theComputer Graphicscourse, focusing on its novel concepts, methodologies, and outcomes. The course team proposed the “Regression, Iteration, Activation” teaching philosophy, constructing a “cognitive space” that integrates theory and practice through interconnected case studies. In this space, instructors guide students to think critically and engage actively through iterative, in-depth activation teaching methods. The goal is to cultivate top-tier, innovative talent capable of developing graphics engines and building a domestic GPU ecosystem. Under Prof.Wan’s leadership, theComputer Graphicscourse has been recognized as a National First-Class Undergraduate Course. Furthermore, two team members were selected for the “2021 National Outstanding Teacher Award Program for University Computer Science Faculty” due to their contributions to the course. The team continues to innovate, with their translation ofThe Art of Functional Algorithm Designand their newly authoredComputer Graphicstextbook—aligned with first-class course standards—set for publication.
This competition, guided by the Department of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education and organized by the China Association of Higher Education, is themed “Promoting Teaching Innovation, Cultivating First-Class Talent.” It aims to advance reforms in higher education, contribute to the “Four New” (new engineering, new medicine, new agricultural sciences, new liberal arts) initiative, and serve as a model for teaching innovation and exchange. The competition emphasizes integrating course-based ideological and political education, setting benchmarks for teaching innovation, and inspiring educators to dedicate themselves to teaching and talent cultivation.
SSE places great importance on teaching excellence, implementing multiple measures to support faculty in conducting teaching research and reforms to enhance their instructional capabilities. The school currently boasts five National First-Class Undergraduate Courses, two national planning textbooks, and numerous accolades, including awards from the National Outstanding Teacher Award Program for Computer Science Faculty, the title of Hubei Province Outstanding Teaching Expert, and a second prize for Teaching Achievement in Hubei Province.
SSE will take the success of the National University Faculty Teaching Innovation Competition as an opportunity to leverage the exemplary role of its teaching innovation achievements. By promoting teaching reform through competition, the school aims to enhance classroom innovation, elevate faculty teaching capabilities, and fulfill its mission of nurturing morally and intellectually excellent students.
